The 3 Things You Need to Do Before Hiring an Interior Designer
Collect Images That Inspire You
This is where your dreams take shape! Don’t worry about whether the images are consistent or if they “go” together. Cast a wide net and save anything that resonates with you—whether it makes you feel happy, inspired, or at peace. Your expert designer will help you weave these selections into a cohesive design plan that beautifully harmonizes all the looks you love.
For online inspiration, Houzz and Pinterest are fantastic resources:
On Houzz, click the “GET IDEAS” button on the homepage, then select the rooms you’re interested in. Use the filter tools to narrow it down even further. When you find something you love, click the heart icon to save it to a folder.
On Pinterest, use the search bar just like Google—type in whatever you’re looking for, such as “White Kitchen with Light Wood Floors.” Save your favorites to a board, and take advantage of Pinterest’s sub-board feature to organize by room or style. I’m a big fan of this feature and would be happy to show you how it works!
Once you’ve gathered your images, share them with your chosen designer, and watch your vision come to life.
Get Clear on Your Budget & Don’t Be Afraid to Share It
Clarifying your budget is just as crucial as defining your design style. A clear budget helps ensure your project reaches the finish line without unexpected compromises or delays.
In my 20 years as a designer, I’ve noticed that many clients hesitate to share their budget because they’re unsure of what it “should” be. Please don’t be afraid to share what you’re comfortable spending on your new living space. Designers are here to make your dreams a reality within your financial comfort zone. A seasoned professional will work with you to create a budget that allows you to move forward confidently.
Interview Designers Before Making a Decision
Choosing the right designer is vital, so I recommend interviewing at least two candidates. This relationship will be close and collaborative, requiring you to make important decisions together, so it’s crucial to find someone you connect with.
The most important thing to look for? Does the designer really listen?
Your home is a unique expression of you, and you deserve to work with someone deeply invested in creating a space that reflects your life story and personal style. A great designer will be genuinely interested in who you are and what you envision.
Beware of designers with a “signature look” that doesn’t allow for flexibility. We all have different tastes, and your home should be as unique as you are.
